Marldon Local History Group – End of 2021
Once again we will shortly see the curtain drop on another year, a year that seems to have flown by despite all the Covid paraphernalia we have had to put up with!
But with the restrictions finally being eased it was great news to hear that the Village Hall Council were once again opening up the hall to regular group users, so on 10th September we were finally able to hold our first open social evening since our Christmas event on 6th December 2019!
That September evening our guest speaker was local historian Dr Todd Gray and he gave an illustrated talk on the origins of the well known song “Uncle Tom Cobley”, accompanied not only by illustrations but also by various sung adaptations from his assistant, and these went down very well with our attendees who totalled 36 in number.
Despite sadly losing some of our much loved and well known members over the forced break, it is good to know that our current membership ‘appears’ to stand at 61, which is up on the total from 12 months ago. I say ‘appears’ because when new membership cards were sent out a few months ago we heard nothing from anyone who had decided not to renew.

Probably by the time you read this our Christmas social evening on Friday 3rd December will have passed by. If not, our guest speaker is Hexworthy Church Warden Tony Parker and he will be giving an illustrated talk entitled “Snowdrops, Christianity and St Raphael’s Victorian School”, free to all History Group members and just £2.00 for guests. This will also include mulled wine and a festive goody bag. If you haven’t seen the snowdrops at Hexworthy Chapel then I highly recommend that you do, weather permitting of course.
We look forward to even more normality returning in 2022 as we have a full calendar of speakers booked for the year, in fact, we even have advanced bookings for 2023!
All that remains to say is that everyone on the Marldon Local History Group Committee wishes all our members and all residents of our Parish a happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year.
