Some of our readers may be interested to know that the History Group was officially formed on 11th September 2001- a day which has since become better known, and for a better reason, as “9/11”. The founding Members of the Group, having watched (on television) the tragedy in New York unfolding throughout the day, wrestled with the dilemma of whether or not to cancel that first, inaugural, Open Meeting. Our Guest Speaker was to be Geoffrey Gilbert (with whom we were in contact during the day) and who was to talk to us about his family and Compton Castle, and he agreed that we should go ahead.
Coincidentally, our AGM this year was scheduled to take place on the 11th of this month, when our Group will have been established for more years than we ever envisaged. However, as you probably know, in addition to our AGM, our Open Meeting scheduled for December and our Christmas Social evening have also had to be cancelled.
In the meantime, and to ensure that the Group remains in existence, and as active as possible, should things “move on”, our current Committee and Officers are prepared to remain in position for a further 12 months. Should any Member wish to join the existing Committee, they will be more than welcome to do so (providing there are no objections).
We also propose to RENEW ALL CURRENT MEMBERSHIPS UNTIL OUR NEXT AGM (September 2021), with NO SUBSCRIPTION CHARGE TO PAY.

Thanks for continuing to contact me, Torhill Cottage still has a lot of memories from growing up especially during the war years, with the village hall a great place of entertainment.
