DECEMBER 2023

I am writing this (obviously) before our Christmas social event, so cannot comment upon the evening, but with foresight and the knowledge I have of Maggie Duffy I know it will have been a great evening, so thanks to all who supported us.

HOWEVER, sadly I have to comment on the uptake from Members around the Village, both on their renewal for 2024 and also on purchase of tickets for the social event.
Our membership renewals are massively down, and of those who have renewed only around 2/3rds purchased Christmas tickets which is a big disappointment to the Committee.

Everything has been advertised far and wide, both on social media and the Parish notice boards, but the response has been poor. Both the Secretary and I will be reviewing the future of the Group with the rest of the Committee in the New Year and we will keep you all informed.

That’s it for now – so take care, have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

See you all again in 2024!

Derek .. Chairman/Treasurer MLHG

  1. Dear Derek,

I have received your e.mail today and am sad to learn of your membership problem and the apparent lack of interest in your social event. A Family History Society of which I am a member is having a similar membership problem.

I am pretty sure that I have paid my current membership fee to you but if not please let me know and I will deal with it. Unfortunately I live too far away to attend your meetings or social events as I live in Bridport,Dorset am 88 years old my husband is 92 and neither of us drive now ! However since first discovering your website and becoming a member of your group a couple of years ago I have really enjoyed the information you have given out and particularly the re-run of the booklet referring to Marldon in Wartime.

My parents were living in Occombe Valley Road when I was born at Paignton Hospital in 1935 and then we moved a little way to Shorten Valley Road when I was about 2. During the years we were there the various routes to and from Marldon became well known to me via the lanes and footpaths especially through Occombe woods past the farm as it was and on through the path fields where Occombe Farm Shop is now and so on to Marldon and Compton to the extent that the whole area has always seemed like home to me. We rely now on family to drive us around and on occasion still find ourselves in the area and call at Occombe Farm or the Smokey House Inn.

I do hope that you will be able to continue as a Group.

My best wishes to you for Christmas and the New Year.

    1. Good day to you Joan … I can confirm that you did renew your membership with us back in September using the BACS banking system.
It’s great that you follow us via the website and such a shame that you are not able to attend any of our meetings.
If ever we can assist you in anyway with information or to answer a question that you might have then please do get in touch.
A very happy and peaceful Christmas to you and your husband and best wishes for 2024.
      Best regards
      Derek … Chairman.

    1. Hi Stephen ..
34 Millmans Road is our address – Julie deals with memberships but I will ask her to sort out a couple of cards for you and Jacki so they are ready here. No rush but if you pop round sometime one of us is usually in.
      Happy Christmas to you.
      Derek
