Although this bumper, two for the price of one, double issue report is only available in our Parish Magazine from Friday 1st December, online it does give me a few more days in which to remind you (whether you are a Member of our Group or not) that our Christmas Social Evening is on FRIDAY 8th DECEMBER, 7.30 pm in the Village Hall, as usual. For the first time, admission is not limited to Members and spouse/guest, but is open to ALL,ie Members and non-Members. Tickets are available now at £2.50 for Members and £3.50 for non-Members. Of course if you are not a Member, you can become one – our subscription is only £5 per year and your ticket will be £2.50. Also, being a Member entitles you to free entry at all of our Quarterly Open Meetings, at which we have a guest Speaker on a subject of local and/or historical interest. Our Guest at our Christmas Social Evening will be our ‘old’ friend Maggie Duffy, who will entertain us with her “Christmas Capers” – a very funny mixture of humour and song. Maggie has been our Guest on previous Christmas Evenings, and is always very well received. There will be mince pies, mulled wine, a bumper raffle with many prizes, and a free “special prize” raffle with your ticket. We look forward to hearing from you, and seeing you on the night.
Also available on the night will be the Group’s DVD “The Story of Marldon”, which the Group produced a few years ago. Since then, we have sold more than 200 copies, which speaks for itself! The DVD runs for about an hour and is compiled from old and new photos and film from our Archive, and features the people, organisations and events of the Parish, as well as its landscape and history. At only £5 it is an ideal Christmas present for yourself, family or friends and anyone who knows Marldon. The DVD is also available from our former Post Office (now to be known as “Marldon Cards & News”), and from our local Hair Salon “Cut of Class”. Looking forward, we are pleased to tell you that our Secretary, Derek, has arranged our programme of Speakers fornext year, and already is looking at our programme for 2019 (so leaving the EU will not be the only thing to look forward to in that year !). Dr. Todd Gray is a Research Fellow at Exeter University and is one of our most requested Speakers. His talks are always interesting, informative and well researched. His talk tonight is a new one titled “Marldon & Elizabethan Insults in Devon” and promises to be amusing as well!
FRIDAY 8th JUNE
“Warhorse” is the latest talk by Dartmoor expert Paul Rendell. This talk, illustrated by many photographs, is the story of the making of the recent successful Steven Spielberg film (based on the book by Michael Murpurgo and the award winning stage play), and filmed on locations on Dartmoor.
FRIDAY 7th SEPTEMBER
“Policing the Peninsula” is an illustrated talk by Simon Dell, and is a history of policing in the West Country, with some amusing anecdotes. Simon is new to our Group, partly due to his being a much in demand Speaker, and we are looking forward to hearing about his somewhat unusual subject.
Finally, as this is the last issue of the Magazine for 2017, on behalf of our Committee may I thank all our Members (and non-members) for their support through attending our Open Meetings and donating so many items to our Archive, and wish them all (and all the readers of this Magazine) a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful and healthy New Year.
